Camp Crinkleroot

Camp Crinkleroot

Camp Information

Camp Crinkleroot is now offered twice per year - once during the fall semester and once during the month of April in the spring semester.  Sponsored by the Appalachian State University Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services, Camp Crinkleroot is a free day camp for kids on the Autism Spectrum (or similar disorders).

Fall Camp: a one-day activity-based camp for ages 8-18 held on the campus of Appalachian State University and the Beaver College of Health Sciences.  Fall Camp Crinkleroot is focused on developing communication and social skills-- activities are tailored to priority needs for each camper.  The themed  activities throughout the day are interactive, creative and highly fun.

Spring Camp: a weekend day camp during the month of April for ages 8-14. Spring Camp Crinkleroot is about building friendships through recreational and creative activities.  Spring camp offers a typical camp experience for children in the community and includes activities such as camp songs and skits, group interactive games, treasure hunts and lots of free play.  Siblings are invited to attend spring camp to give parents time off while their kids enjoy supervised and engaging activities!

Camp Crinkleroot 2022 (Fall)

Fall Camp Crinkleroot will take place on the afternoon of November 13, 2022. Camp will be held at Leon Levine Hall, 1179 State Farm Road in Boone. Past campers as well as siblings of campers are welcome to attend! Please complete a camper application below - registrations will be capped at 16 campers.

Parents are also invited to attend a nutrition education workshop about gluten and casein. Participants will learn more about a GF/CF free diet and how that may help children on the spectrum. Some parents have started their child with autism on a version of the GF/CF diet for a different reason, and later noticed improvement in behavior, social skills, and learning.

Both Spring Camp Crinkleroot and Fall Camp Crinkleroot will be staffed by trained ASU student volunteers and faculty members. Each camper will be paired one-to-one with a counselor throughout the camp day. The groups will participate in a variety of activities including indoor and outdoor recreational activities, expressive arts activities, group interaction games, a campfire (spring), riding the AppalCart (fall) and other fun camp activities. All activities at Crinkleroot will be modified to provide a fun and enriching weekend for each individual camper.
