Camp Crinkleroot is a program sponsored by the Appalachian State University Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services. Now offered twice per year, the upcoming fall camp is a one-day camp for kids ages 8-18 with an Autism Spectrum or similar disorder. The focus of fall camp is on developing communication and social skills and activities will be tailored to priority needs for each camper. The theme of this year's camp is "technology" and various activities throughout the day will be interactive, creative and highly fun. Fall Camp is scheduled for November 2nd at Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences in Boone.
The spring camp is held on the beautiful grounds of Camp Skyranch over the course of a weekend in April. The day camp offers a typical camp experience for children in the community who are ages 8-14 with an Autism Spectrum or similar disorder. Camp Sky Ranch is steeped in history as one of the first inclusive summer camps in North Carolina and is now home to Sky Valley Zip Tours. The focus of Spring Camp is to provide a short break for parents/caregivers and to encourage friendship building for campers in a supportive, fun and interactive environment. Siblings are invited to attend spring camp and there will be special activities designed to support their needs as well!
Both Spring Camp Crinkleroot and Fall Camp Crinkleroot will be staffed by ASU student volunteers and interested faculty members. Each camper will be paired one-to-one with a counselor throughout the camp day. The groups will participate in a variety of activities including indoor and outdoor recreational activities, expressive arts activities, group interaction games, a campfire (spring), riding the AppalCart (fall) and other fun camp activities. All activities at Crinkleroot will be modified to provide a fun and enriching weekend for each individual camper.
